On the day of moving your goods into

• Make sure you will be done by closing time (alarms and the electrical fence are automatically activated at 6 pm).

• Furniture should be disassembled where possible, this eases storage and moving of the goods. Tape screws in a plastic bag to the furniture.

• Use blankets, bubble wrap, carpets, cushions, cardboard, etc. to prevent goods from scratches or other damage during transport.

• Secure goods to trailers, on bakkies or in trucks with tie-downs, rope or belts to prevent them from falling off or from toppling over. If there is a possibility of rain, ensure the goods arrive dry at the storage unit as damp can cause rot and the forming of mould.

• Remove or tape down drawers in cabinets during transportation to prevent them from falling out.  

Packing your storage unit:  

• Consider safety, make sure goods are not going to topple over and hurt someone.

• Plan the packing of your store to enable access to goods you may need.

• Generally, you should move large items in first and store them in a manner that allows for smaller goods to be placed on top of larger items.

• Do not store goods against the walls; leave some breathing space to prevent moisture build-up. This will also prevent scratches when you move goods in and out of the unit.

• Do not stack boxes if you are not certain that the weight can be handled by the boxes underneath. 

• Keep a record of what you have in boxes, what you have in the store and where in the store it is placed. You may forget where you placed an item and in the unlikely event of loss, your insurance company will need the inventory.

• Write down the number of your locker, remember to lock it when you are done and make sure you know where you are keeping the keys.
